XR650L Crankcase Breather Filter

Post by BarkSlayer » Sun Apr 07, 2019 1:33 pm

Hey guys...I picked up a 2005 XR650L last weekend. The bike has 7700 miles and is in excellent condition. It appears at one point though, the engine oil may have been overfilled, as everything behind the cylinder was coated with oil that I’m guessing was forced out through all the connections in the separator hoses. I removed the smog pump and oil separator, but need a recommendation for a crankcase vent filter that I can install now to the crank vent fitting. What works best and where can I get one?

As the piston goes up and down 650cc's of air goes in and out of the breather , when it blows out it carries oil vapor. The oil separator condenses the vapor and allows it to be drawn back into the motor. It's best to leave the breather set up as it came from Honda.

Thanks, Joe. I didn’t look closely, as it was an oily mess but can the separator be opened and cleaned before installing again? I’d hate to have to buy new parts for that.

I believe some folks used a UNI #UP-103 clamp-on style air filter.

Or the Push-In type UP-123 (Read "Smog Block-Off Carb Pics" page).

And you'll end up with oil all over the place.

Personally I would leave the stock separator too, Joe. I'm simply just giving the visitor the info they were asking about.
