2005 Yamaha WR250F Competition Model
What happens when you take one of the most maneuverable, fun-to-ride off-road racers and make it lighter, narrower and lower its center of gravity? Well, you get the 2005 WR250F. Look out, because the best just got better.

Yamaha is the leader in the small-bore four-stroke off-road racing market – a segment they basically created with the WR250F when it was first released in 2001 With this year’s little thumper, Yamaha concentrated on handling, light weight and comfort, starting with the all-new slimmer fuel tank, radiator shrouds and seat, which together increase the rider’s ability to move around adequately on the bike, resulting in more control at higher speeds in the most demanding of off-road environs. The seat isn’t just narrower, either, it’s also 10mm lower, which helps to lower the racebike’s center of gravity and improve the handling even further.

In addition, the newest WR250F comes with all-new 48mm forks, increasing the overall comfort for the rider who is in the saddle for hours at a time (as is typical at off-road events), while also improving handling significantly. The forks are beefy, but they’re also valved in such a way that they will soak up off-road obstacles – such as rocks, bumps and logs – with ease.

Most people would be happy enough with just the handling upgrades, but Yamaha didn’t stop there. The top end of the 2005 WR250F engine has been redesigned as well, including a newly designed cylinder head, piston, combustion chamber and intake port, not to mention the new carburetor and ignition settings, all of which combine to create more power throughout the rev range. Horsepower is king, after all.

Separating the WR250F from its track-ready YZ brothers are the additional accessories for the rider who chooses the open trails over the tight tracks. The WR250F features a 60-watt halogen headlight, a taillight, voltage regulator, tripmeter, an 18-inch rear wheel, 2.6-gallon fuel tank, wide-ratio transmission and a U.S. Forest Service-approved spark arrestor. A brand-new, lighter aluminum exhaust silencer, lighter rear sprocket, lighter rear swingarm, all-new Renthal aluminum handlebars, a lightweight chain, lightweight hub, and aluminum spoke nipples help to complete the lighter overall package for the 2005 model year. All of these weight savings, and it still features the super-convenient electric start.

The WR250F is perfect for just about any off-road condition you can throw at it, from the deserts to the woods – it can handle it all. Throw in the brand-new shorter front-brake routing, which provide for a greater brake feel, and what you have is a motorcycle that is faster, handles better, and stops quicker than the previous models, which were already the top of the heap. After all, it’s fun to lead. In addition, the WR250F features the “works-style” adjustable clutch perch (fully adjustable at the line with no tools!) and lever makes for a better response and a superior feel.
