For those lucky enough to develop an interest in riding early on in life, Yamaha’s TT-R90 is a must-have. Just for our smaller riders, a four-stroke, SOHC, 89cc, air-cooled four-stroke engine powers this compact and reliable motorcycle, which pumps out consistent, even power, making the ride as smooth as possible for young, new riders. The Yamaha TT-R90 also makes a great adult mini-bike.

The TT-R90 features a three-speed, semi-automatic transmission that assists riders in learning how to shift (i.e. riders graduating from the fully automatic PW50) and use throttle control without a clutch. Until these skills are mastered, parents can utilize the included throttle limiter. With the turn of a screwdriver, parents can control the top speed of their child’s motorcycle in relation to his or her riding ability. Once mastered, the graduate may progress to larger kids’ bikes by adapting more quickly to the use of a clutch.

The TT-R90 has been an extremely popular bike for the little tikes, and for good reason, as the “E” in the TT-R90E stands for Electric start. That’s right, the little guy doesn’t even have to kick his bike over anymore, just hit the magic button and ride. This way, beginning riders don’t have to worry about flooding it out and not being able to start it.

The front forks give a generous 4.3 inches of smooth-action wheel travel for a soft ride; while the lightweight rear suspension utilizes a square-section swinging arm and offers 3.7 inches of travel to tackle terrain and provide a cushioned-landing on jumps. Equipped with a 14-inch front wheel, 12-inch rear wheel and low 24.5-inch-high racing-type seat, the TT-R90 is the perfect fit for younger/smaller riders.

The TT-R90 chassis is based on the highly successful PW80 design, while Yamaha’s championship YZ line inspired its radical bodywork. Its tubular twin-spar construction creates a rigid chassis for spirited handling, and this design also offers easy access to the engine for routine maintenance. The TT-R90 is fitted with a tough steel engine guard, and a grab handle behind the seat makes for simple loading into a truck or trailer.

A lightweight plastic fuel tank with air scoops, YZ-type front and rear fenders, side-panels, front number plate and bright new graphics make the TT-R90 the most impressive kids’ bike on the market today. Suggested Retail: $1,699 USD.
