Ok here's the story: Bike bought cheap with 98000km. New piston, rebore and new exhaust valve seats and the bike is starting and running great. Stopped in traffic and noticed the headlight was on so turned it off... thereafter the engine stops and has not started since. There is no spark at plug. All the lights, horn etc. work except for the headlight which will not come on despite bulb being good. Now, I am new to the XL but had loads of bikes and this looks like a wiring glitch. I thought the headlight was not connected to the ignition. There is power to the coil. Off to check the wires again. HELP any suggestions before I change the CDI? TIA

Checked, replaced coil, stator etc..etc. No spark! So has to be a bad connection in wiring loom. Anyone know where I can get a fresh new one? Or had a similar experience and shed some light? Have heard that XTs fail around the steering head due to handlebar movement.

I had a similar problem with my '85 XR350R. No spark after I removed and ported the head. It turned out the wire connections to the head light needed cleaned. That fixed the problem. There are some resistance tests to check out the stator, coil and pulse generator. Unfortunately, no way to check the CDI. I hope this helps, good luck!

Thanks for reply. Headlight connection sounds like a real possibility as engine stopped for the last time when I turned the headlight off at the traffic lights. Ever since, the headlight nor the engine has worked. When you say "headlight connection" do you mean the H4 plug? The only thing I didn't try replacing was the CDI. Cheers

check the switch at the handle bar.. is the lite switch and kill switch at the same place?

Okay.. Six months later! The problem was the top winding of the stator was fried and took out the CDI with it. New G41 stator and CDI and the bike is starting and running well. 98000km on the clock, the bike seems to have been looked after well with cycle parts and cables all in very good condition. Seems like the last owner gave up. New piston, rebore, new valve seats and ignition. Now I hope the rest holds out for a while!
