CRF = Competition Race Four-stroke. CR = Competition Race. XR = Cross-country Race.

Sorry to be the one to break it to you but the XR is not a race bike. In the link I posted earlier is a direct quote from Mr. Edmunds of American Honda.

how isnt a xr a race bike....they got the 250r and 650 and thos you can race enduro/scrambles and offroad races?

Reply by Admin on 07/12/2004 5:01:09 PM
I did not say the xr could not be raced. The webmaster of this site raced an xr400 in AMA 37 events. Honda does not market or intend any factory stock XR to be a race bike. Other than the 650, what xr have you seen Honda market in the US as any kind of a race bike?

It is my understanding that CR originally stood for Close Ratio, referring to the gearing. (Likewise WR stands for Wide Ratio). And the F, of course, stands for Four stroke.

However, to capitalize on the success of their CRF bikes Honda "bastardized" the terminology for the 250 X, calling a bike geared wide ratio CR.

Heard the above from a knowlegeable source, but can't verify it first hand.

The initials "CR" and "CR-f" stand for "California Racer" w/the added "f" stands for Four-Stroke.

intersting... that's one I hadn't heard yet.

Ahh cr for honda and f for 4 stroke!

The Honda CR does not stand for Close Ratio. Husky CRs and WRs stand for close ratio and wide ratio, same with Ymaha WRs, but not the Honda.

for those of you who didnt read admins first and second posts saying they dont stand for anything, heres the text from the link he gave in the beginning:
From Lee Edmunds of American Honda Motor Company:

The letters at the end of CRF-R/X/F designate the type of use for which the bike is intended.

XR______Off road 4-stroke
CR-R____Motocross 2-stroke, competition only
CRF-R___Motocross 4-stroke, competition only
CRF-X___High performance, EPA legal, Off road competition capable 4-stroke
CRF-F___Off road family
