2003 DRZ400 and DRZ400E Off-Road Models

The introduction of the Suzuki DR-Z400 models in 2000 changed the face of off-roading. Three years later, both the DR-Z400 and electric-start DR-Z400E continue to reign supreme in off-road motorcycling. Not surprising, considering the well-balanced performance of the compact four-stroke engine combined with the strong, lightweight chassis. For 2003, the DR-Z400 and DR-Z400E are back again, but with a stunning new white headlight housing and side covers; RM- inspired chrome graphics; and a proven four-stroke powerplant -- all wrapped in a sturdy, lightweight and nimble chassis.

Powered by a 398cc, DOHC, liquid-cooled engine with dry-sump lubrication system, both DR-Z400 models have the performance and power to handle any off-road situation. The compact engine is equipped with a four-valve cylinder head, Keihin FCR39 carburetor with a throttle-position sensor, five-speed transmission, automatic decompression system, forged piston and lightweight nickel-silicon-phosphorus-carbide-plated cylinder. The electric-start DR-Z400E also comes with a small, maintenance-free battery and additional electric-start components.

The compact four-stroke motor is mounted in a chromoly-steel frame with detachable aluminum sub-frame. This setup was patterned after Suzuki RM motocross models and was designed with maximum torsional strength and light weight. Oil for the dry-sump lubrication system is carried in the main backbone and front downtube of the frame for maximum efficiency. Long-travel, conventional 49 mm front forks have an internal cartridge with adjustable compression and rebound damping. A fully adjustable RM-style rear shock offers adjustable high- and low-speed compression damping and is mated to a lightweight aluminum swingarm. Wide RM-style footpegs come standard, and lightweight aluminum wheels and hubs incorporate disc brakes front and rear.

New-generation yellow bodywork, ’03 RM-inspired chrome graphics, and a new white headlight housing and side covers clothe the DR-Z400s. Their slim design allows for quick and easy movements, allowing the rider to move freely back and forth over the motorcycle. The left-side frame cover features quick-release fasteners for easy air-filter maintenance. Rounding out the package are a mechanical tripmeter, 55 watts of off-road lighting and a unique LED taillight implanted on a flexible base. Suggested retail on the DR-Z400 was $5,349 and $5,449 for the DR-Z400E.
